Indeed. What’s peculiar is how differently we experience our mental processes, which must be why we tend to understand the brain that way: it feels intuitively right. Further, we have the distinct impression of a self (us) fully aware and in command of everything. That’s why the findings of neuroscience in this respect, mostly through brain damage, as you point out, can seem so disconcerting. Like many other scientific observations and advances before, they shatter our “common-sense” grasp of nature in general and of human nature in particular.
